Question about Star Ocean......

I don't ususally like RPG's, but I like Crisis Core, and I've heard good things about this game. I don't know whether it's the type of RPG I would like to buy. Could some of you guys tell me what it's about and how it's played? Like, is it turn-based or like Crisis Core where there's no stopping or taking turns?
